This pond plant dies right back in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moist to wet or boggy, humus-rich soil or aquatic compost
  • Depth of water: 10-20cm (4-8in)
  • Rate of growth: fast
  • Flowering period: June to September
  • Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection)

Featuring elegantly arrow-shaped leaves and delicate white blossoms adorned with captivating dark purple centres, this aquatic perennial enjoys a shallow water environment such as container water features and smaller ponds. Sagittaria sagittifolia is our native arrowhead variant, distinguished by its smaller and less invasive nature, and making it a stellar choice for wildlife ponds.

  • Garden care:
To prevent this plant spreading too vigorously, it is advisable to pot it up (using aquatic compost) into a pond basket. Then, lift and divide the plant as necessary. In late winter, pop on a pair of tough gloves, and comb through the plant in late winter to remove any dead foliage. Plant shallowly between 10-20cm (4-8in) of water.
    • CAUTION toxic if eaten/skin & eye irritant
