Tulbaghia violacea

society garlic

Product Image
Clusters of large, star-like, lilac flowers, which have a slight scent that becomes more pronounced in the evening, top upright stems from midsummer to early autumn. These appear above dense clumps of attractive, grass-like, greyish green leaves. Best grown at the front of a sunny, well-drained border or in a gravel garden, Tulbaghia is often called 'society garlic' as the leaves smell similar to garlic and onions, and can be useful as a pest repellent plant especially when grown under roses.

How to care for Tulbaghia violacea:

Plant society garlic in a sunny, warm spot at the pond edge where the soil stays moist but not waterlogged. Keep the crown just above the surface of the water so only the lower roots benefit from the damp conditions.

Split and divide large clumps in spring to maintain vigour. In colder parts of the UK, grow it in pots or lift, so it can be overwintered in a sheltered, frost-free place, as prolonged cold can weaken the plant. Trim back tired foliage and remove old flower stems to keep it neat.
