A medium-sized, deciduous maple prized for its vibrant crimson autumn foliage that develops a rounded, symmetrical crown when given ample sunlight.
Clusters of tiny red flowers in spring give way to pink-tinged seed pods, and the lustrous green leaves throughout summer have red stalks and emerge red-tinged, while in autumn, the dramatic foliage transforms into varying shades of crimson red.
Acer rubrum Red Sunset is an excellent choice for showcasing as a specimen plant in lawns, and thrives in moist, slightly acidic conditions, which are ideal for achieving the most vibrant autumn colours.

How to care for Acer rubrum Red Sunset ('Franksred'):
Plant in a sheltered spot, away from cold winds. Dig in a hole twice the size the root ball, add well-rotted organic matter and stake when young. Do not allow to dry out while it is getting established.
Protect young trees from winter frost with a 10cm (4in) mulch of organic matter, taking care to leave space around the trunk of the tree.
No routine pruning is required, just remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches in late autumn or winter when they are fully dormant. Avoid pruning at any other time of the year as acers tend to 'bleed' sap if cut while they are actively growing.
