Acorus calamus 'Argenteostriatus'

silver-striped sweet flag (Acorus calamus variegatus)

Product Image
Adapting well to wet and boggy habitats, this deciduous aquatic perennial unveils strap-shaped leaves, a mesmerising fusion of mid-green and creamy-white stripes, resembling an iris. As midsummer appears, unassuming brown horn-like flowers emerge, subtly placed just below the tips of the leaf-like stems. Beyond its ornamental charm, 'Argenteostriatus' boasts long, narrow blade-like leaves attached to rosy coloured rhizomes, emitting a spicily scented aroma when crushed (in historical times, the roots and leaves were treasured for their medicinal and aromatic qualities, finding use in scented floors and a variety of products, including toothpaste and gin).

How to care for Acorus calamus Argenteostriatus:

Reliable in wet or very moist, ‘boggy’ fertile soils, this acorus can be planted in aquatic baskets (to reduce root disturbance) in shallow water up to 22cm (9"). Divide congested clumps in early spring every few years. Wearing gloves, comb through old or damaged foliage in late winter to tidy if necessary.
