This pond plant dies right back in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun
  • Depth of water: 16-25cm (6-10")
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

A British native aquatic perennial showcasing rosettes of hosta-like leaves extending up to 30cm (12”). In late spring, Alisma plantago-aquatica bursts into tall panicles of delicate three-petaled white flowers with a hint of yellow, attracting dragonflies, bees, butterflies, and hoverflies. Beyond its aesthetic charm, the wide panicles provide resting spots for these insects and support their life cycle, making it a vibrant hub of ecological activity in your garden.

Please note that as these plants grow taller, particularly from May onward, bent or broken leaves may be challenging to avoid despite our careful packaging. However, simply remove any damaged leaves, and the plant will regenerate by putting on new growth commensurate with the season.

  • Garden care:
Reliable in wet soils, this marginal can be planted in aquatic baskets (to reduce root disturbance) in shallow water up to 16-25cm (6-10"). Divide congested clumps in early spring every few years. Dead head before the seeds fall to prevent self-seeding, and cut back foliage in late autumn.
