A relatively new variety, this allium has already picked up a coveted AGM, wowing the assessors with its large, spherical heads (up to 18cm across) of deep purple flowers. These appeared on stout stems over a prolonged time and even after the flowers had faded, the seedheads remained attractive for several weeks. As well as offering a long season of interest in the border, 'Ambassador' is also an excellent variety for cutting and adding to both fresh and dried arrangements.
How to care for Allium Ambassador 'XXL bulb':
Allium bulbs are easy to grow in a sunny spot with freely drained soil, or a good quality potting compost. Ideally they should be planted in September or October, but could also be planted in early November in milder regions. holes roughly three times as deep as the diameter of the bulb and place them at the base, pointy side up before gently infilling and watering to settle them in. In early spring, as growth begins, apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser, and allow the plants to die back naturally and completely before tidying away.
