Forming a neat, mounding clump, Alstroemeria ‘River Valley’ carries dark green, lance-shaped leaves, often edged with a subtle cream margin that adds extra interest even when not in flower.
From early summer right through to autumn, rich deep pink blooms appear in generous clusters, each flower marked with creamy yellow-white throats and fine red-brown flecks that draw the eye in. The upright stems are sturdy and rarely need staking, making it an easy choice for patio pots, smaller gardens or the front of sunny borders where space is at a premium.
This Peruvian lily thrives in fertile, well-drained soil and enjoys a sunny or lightly shaded, sheltered position. With its long flowering season, compact habit and excellent performance in containers, it’s a practical way to add strong, repeat colour to your outdoor space.
How to care for Alstroemeria River Valley ('Tessumriver') (Summer Paradise - Valley Series):
Plant in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in a sunny or lightly shaded position, ideally sheltered from strong winds. If planting into large containers, use a general-purpose potting compost. Water regularly during the growing season, especially in dry spells, but avoid waterlogging.
Newly planted Alstroemerias should be given a very generous 20cm (8in) deep mulch of chipped bark in their first winter to help the plants become established. In subsequent autumns, provide a dry mulch of bracken or bark chippings to help protect the crowns.
After flowering, cut back the faded flower-stems, but make sure you always wear gloves when working with Peruvian lilies, as contact with the foliage may cause skin irritation.
