Neat in habit but generous with its flowers, this hardy perennial earns its place in both borders and patio pots. Alstroemeria Summer Break builds a compact clump of mid-green, lance-shaped leaves that stay fresh-looking through the season, providing a smart backdrop for the long succession of blooms.

Flowering begins in early summer and keeps going right through to autumn, so you’re not left with gaps in your planting scheme. Creamy-white petals are boldly edged in pink, with warm yellow centres and dark brown speckling adding detail up close.

Reliable and tough, it becomes more drought tolerant once established and performs well in fertile, well-drained soil in sun or light shade. Like all good Peruvian Lilies, it’s excellent for cutting, giving you strong stems and

How to care for Alstroemeria Summer Break ('Tessumbreak') (PBR) (Summer Paradise - Summer Series):

Plant in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in a sunny or lightly shaded position, ideally sheltered from strong winds. If planting into large containers, use a general-purpose potting compost. Water regularly during the growing season, especially in dry spells, but avoid waterlogging.

Newly planted Alstroemerias should be given a very generous 20cm (8in) deep mulch of chipped bark in their first winter to help the plants become established. In subsequent autumns, provide a dry mulch of bracken or bark chippings to help protect the crowns.

After flowering, cut back the faded flower-stems, but make sure you always wear gloves when working with Peruvian lilies, as contact with the foliage may cause skin irritation.
