Bright, clean and effortlessly elegant, this is a perennial that keeps the garden looking fresh for months on end. Forming a compact, upright clump of dark green, lance-shaped foliage, it creates a smart base for the steady flow of blooms that follow from early summer right through to the first frosts.
Large, funnel-shaped flowers open in crisp white with delicate dark red striping and fine speckling across the inner petals, giving each bloom subtle detail without losing that cool, luminous feel. The overall effect is light and airy, yet it still has enough presence to hold its own in a sunny border or a well-planted patio container.
Alstroemeria Summer Ice is a hardy, high-performing Peruvian Lily that becomes increasingly drought tolerant once established, making it both beautiful and practical. It’s also an excellent choice for a cutting garden, with sturdy stems and long-lasting flowers that look just as good in a vase as they do outside.
How to care for Alstroemeria Summer Ice (Summer Paradise - Series):
Plant in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in a sunny or lightly shaded position, ideally sheltered from strong winds. If planting into large containers, use a general-purpose potting compost. Water regularly during the growing season, especially in dry spells, but avoid waterlogging.
Newly planted Alstroemerias should be given a very generous 20cm (8in) deep mulch of chipped bark in their first winter to help the plants become established. In subsequent autumns, provide a dry mulch of bracken or bark chippings to help protect the crowns.
After flowering, cut back the faded flower-stems, but make sure you always wear gloves when working with Peruvian lilies, as contact with the foliage may cause skin irritation.
