Anemone hupehensis var. japonica 'Prinz Heinrich'
Japanese anemone
This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.
- Position: full sun or partial shade
- Soil: moist, fertile, humus-rich soil
- Rate of growth: average
- Flowering period: July to September
- Hardiness: fully hardy
Initially, the flowers of this compact Japanese anemone are a rich pinkish purple, but as they age, the colour softens. A semi-double form, the petals are also variable in length, and often inrolled or quilled, so the flowers have an informal feel that lends itself well to more naturalistic settings. - Garden care: Cut back the stalks after the flowers have faded, and tidy up old dead leaves in March, then mulch well. Avoid moving the plant since it resents disturbance. Where necessary lift and divide congested clumps in autumn or early spring.
