A tough, forgiving houseplant that is perfect for the non-green-fingered, this classic indoor foliage plant is ideal for anyone after low-effort greenery. It handles low light, fluctuating temperatures, and irregular watering with ease, making it suitable for shady spots and busy lifestyles.
Aspidistra elatior has broad, glossy, dark green leaves that grow upright from the base, slowly forming a neat clump over time. It's rarely troubled by pests or diseases and only needs repotting every few years to refresh the compost. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the foliage, and keep it lightly moist during the growing season, allowing it to dry a little in between.
Cast iron plant is well-suited to hallways, offices, or living rooms where light levels are lower and other plants may struggle.

How to care for Aspidistra elatior:
Keep Aspidistra in bright, indirect light or a shaded spot away from strong sun, which can scorch the leaves. Water regularly in spring and summer, allowing the top of the compost to dry slightly between waterings, and reduce watering in winter.
Wipe or shower the leaves occasionally to remove dust and keep the foliage looking its best. It prefers cool indoor temperatures and can tolerate a minimum of 7-10°C (45-50°F). Repot every 4-5 years in a loam-based or houseplant compost, only when the roots are pot-bound. Avoid overwatering and cold draughts.
