The strap-shaped foliage of this architectural evergreen has a silver-bronze flush, and in lower temperatures, red tints start to become more apparent.

Forming a fountain-like clump, Astelia nervosa 'Westland' makes a handsome specimen in larger pots, but will also add a touch of drama to the border.

How to care for Astelia nervosa Westland:

Choose a sheltered spot with well-drained soil and partial shade, though it can tolerate sun if the soil stays moist. Protect the crown in cold or exposed gardens with a thick winter mulch, especially during frosts.

Avoid overhead watering, as water collecting in the crown can cause rot. Tidy up any damaged or dead foliage in spring, and divide congested clumps between April and May, if needed, to maintain vigour.
