One of the taller species, the upright stems ofFritillaria persica can carry up to 30 pendulous, bell-shaped flowers in spring.
The flower colour can vary from greenish-brown to deep purple, and they can look almost black in certain lights. This brooding colour contrasts well with silvery foliage plants, and their upright habit means they also associate well with grasses.

How to care for Fritillaria persica:
Medium to large bulbs, best planted 15cm (6in) deep in well-drained, sandy or gritty soil, as they dislike sitting wet. A sunny, sheltered spot suits them, and they appreciate feeding with a high-potassium fertiliser during growth. Like F. imperialis, plant bulbs slightly on their side to avoid rot.
