Calycanthus 'Venus'

Carolina allspice

Product Image
This deciduous shrub is a beauty. It is a hybrid that is the result of a complex breeding programme, which has bestowed upon it the best features of all its parents. It is a strong grower and produces its large fragrant flowers over a long period from early summer. These are very beautiful, resembling slender-petalled magnolias, which open from fat buds that form along the stems. The first flush of flowers is the most impressive and will last for a few weeks, but once over, Calycanthus 'Venus' will continue to bloom intermittently throughout summer and into autumn.

How to care for Calycanthus Venus:

Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in a sunny spot, ideally with some shelter from cold, drying winds. It thrives in soils with consistent moisture, especially during dry spells. Mulch annually with well-rotted organic matter to help conserve moisture and improve soil structure.

Calycanthus is generally low maintenance but benefits from light pruning—remove any dead, damaged or crossing stems in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and encourage healthy growth. Avoid heavy pruning as it can reduce flowering.
