Extending the joy of fresh cherry harvests into late August, this outstanding British-bred variety stands out for its exceptionally large, heart-shaped fruits that mature to an appetizing deep black-red hue. Cherry 'Penny' represents modern fruit breeding at its finest, combining compact growth with remarkable fruit quality - each juicy morsel delivers a perfectly balanced sweet, mild flavour encased in firm flesh.

While its manageable size makes it suitable for smaller orchards and gardens, this variety requires cross-pollination from compatible partners such as 'Summer Sun' or 'Stella' (groups 3 and 4) to produce its impressive crop. Its late-season cropping schedule not only helps extend the traditional cherry season but also potentially avoids the peak bird-feeding period that often plagues earlier varieties.

Pollination information: This cherry is not self-fertile and requires another variety of cherry nearby. Ideally this should come from the same pollination group 4, however it is possible to use one from group 3 as well.

How to care for cherry Penny:

When planting your cherry tree, prepare a hole up to three times the diameter of its root system. Fork over the base of the pit in readiness, incorporating plenty of organic matter into the backfill and planting hole, and stake firmly.

Avoiding frozen and waterlogged soil, trees should be planted out and staked as soon as they arrive. If you've ordered a bare root tree, soak the roots in a bucket of water for half an hour prior to planting, or if this is not possible, they can be heeled in temporarily, covering their roots with soil, or potted up. Protect from cold, drying winds.

Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to support growth and fruiting. Lightly prune in summer to reduce the risk of silver leaf and bacterial canker, to retain an open ‘goblet’ shape and remove any damaged, diseased or broken branches.
