chilli 'Joes Long Cayenne'

chillies or Capsicum annuum var. annuum (Longum Group)

Product Image
Bring plenty of heat to your kitchen garden with this impressive chilli, producing an abundance of slender fruits that can grow to 25cm (10in) or more. Ripening from green to glossy red, chilli 'Joes Long Cayenne' delivers a medium-hot kick of around 22,000 Scoville Heat Units, making it ideal for adding spice to fresh dishes or drying and grinding into home-grown cayenne pepper.

Its upright, bushy habit and small green leaves make it well suited to growing in a sunny greenhouse, conservatory or sheltered patio container, where the long, pendant chillies create a colourful display as they mature. As the plants become taller and heavily laden with fruit, a sturdy cane or support will help keep stems upright for a reliable harvest from mid season onwards.

How to care for chilli Joes Long Cayenne:

Grow on in a well-lit, warm location such as a sunny windowsill or greenhouse until all risk of frost has passed before moving them to their final growing positions outside, in a sunny spot, or keep in a greenhouse for earlier harvests and hotter fruits. Keep well watered and feed regularly with high-potash tomato food once the fruits begin to form.

Sowing instructions:

Start off indoors from Feb to May, sowing the seeds 1cm (0.5in) deep in trays and using multi purpose compost to cover them. Alternatively, sow two seeds per pot and select the strongest seedling after they emerge.

Pot up or plant out in a greenhouse from April to June, and when plants reach 20cm (8in) high, pinch out the tips to encourage more side shoots, as this will result in more peppers.
