Clematis × cartmanii 'Avalanche' (PBR)
winter flowering clematis (group 1)
- Position: partial shade
- Soil: fertile, well-drained, neutral soil
- Rate of growth: average
- Flowering period: March to April
- Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection)
Producing a mass of creamy white flowers from late winter to early spring, this bushy evergreen clematis will thrive in a partially shaded spot that is reliably moist in summer, but offers good drainage in winter. It is hardy to -7C, although soft new growth may suffer a little damage when temperatures dip below freezing in winter. This charming climber is perfectly suited to a north- or west-facing aspect, and it will also make a fine specimen in a large pot topped with a trellis panel or obelisk. - Garden care: No routine pruning is necessary. If the spread of the plant needs to be restricted prune immediately after flowering, cutting back overlong shoots to healthy buds. Apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the base of the plant in early spring.
- Humans: Skin irritant; Pets: Harmful if eaten
