Bearing the namesake of a founding member of the Clematis Society, ‘John Howells’ stands tall as a vigorous climber with lush mid-green leaves providing the perfect backdrop for the star-shaped flowers that emerge in a rich carmine hue with brighter red bar and deep wine-red anthers. With a neat and charming habit, this clematis is an extremely floriferous cultivar, adored for its captivating blooms and compact form making it ideal for containers, as well as border obelisks and arches.

How to care for Clematis John Howells ('Zojohnhowells') (PBR):

To avoid dry conditions, and to ensure good soil contact around the rootball, we advise planting climbers at least 30cm (12in), and preferably 45-60cm (18-24in) away from the base of a wall or fence. An even larger distance should be maintained when planting climbers beside an existing tree or shrub.

Clematis are happiest when their roots are kept cool and moist, so try to plant them where that the base of the plants will be lightly shaded by other, lower-growing species. Otherwise, use a clematis root protector, or top-dress the rootball (avoiding the immediate crown), with a generous layer of shingle or pebbles. In early spring cut back the previous year's stems to a pair of strong buds about 15-20cm (6-8in) above ground-level and apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the plant - again avoiding the immediate crown.
