An evergreen eryngium, which forms a clump of bluish-green, strap-shaped leaves that have a serrated and spiny edge. In midsummer and autumn, upright, branching flowerspikes emerge bearing rounded or oval shaped flower clusters, which turn shades of greyish-blue, cream or green as they open. A variable plant, which originates from the Eastern States of the US, it is tolerant of poor soil and drought once established.

How to care for Eryngium yuccifolium:

Eryngium yuccifolium prefers full sun in light, well-drained soil but will tolerate very light shade. Plant into its final position while young, as the roots are often several feet long and do not like to be disturbed. Avoid areas prone to winter wet, as the plant dislikes waterlogged soil. Its architectural flower heads provide winter interest, so resist cutting them back in autumn to add structure and texture to the colder months.

In spring, trim back old stems and any winter-damaged foliage to encourage fresh, vigorous growth and maintain the plant’s striking form for the new season.
