Found growing in meadows throughout Europe, this pretty, summer flowering perennial is a wonderful addition to a wildflower garden or naturalised planting scheme. Pilosella aurantiaca spreads by underground rhizomes and forms rosettes of glaucous, slightly hairy leaves. These form the backdrop from which upright, branching stems rise, carrying burnt orange flowerheads in summer.

A tough little plant that is rarely affected by pests and diseases and will thrive on poorer soils.

How to care for Pilosella aurantiaca:

Plant in a sunny, well-drained spot where it can spread freely; it thrives in poor to moderately fertile soil and doesn’t like waterlogged conditions. Space plants 20-30cm (8-12in) apart to allow room for growth. After planting, water moderately until established, though it becomes more drought-tolerant once settled.

Mulching isn’t usually needed, as this plant prefers open soil. Long-term, keep it in full sun for best flowering and trim back any straggly or dead stems to encourage fresh growth. It can naturalise quickly, so monitor its spread if you want to keep it contained.
