Make an immediate impact with this ‘miniature’ hosta, forming a neat, compact clump of exceptionally thick, rounded leaves that hold their shape well through the season. The deep green foliage is distinctly cupped and slightly glossy, giving the plant a strong architectural leaf that works particularly well at the front of shaded borders, along woodland paths or in containers where foliage detail can be appreciated up close.

In summer, upright stems rise cleanly above the foliage, carrying soft pale lavender to near-white flowers that add a gentle contrast without overpowering the leaves. Hosta ‘Monster Ears’ shows better tolerance of sun than many hostas, though it performs best in moisture-retentive soil with some shade, and like most cultivated varieties, benefits from protection against slugs and snails to keep the foliage pristine.

How to care for Hosta Monster Ears:

Hostas thrive in moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter, ideally with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. While they can tolerate partial shade, dappled sunlight is optimal for maintaining vibrant, healthy foliage. To ensure optimal growth, water your hostas regularly, especially during dry periods. A thick layer of mulch applied in spring or autumn will help retain moisture, suppress weeds and enrich the soil.

Slugs and snails love hostas, so you will need to protect against them. Additionally, elevating your hostas in pots with gravel-topped soil can deter these pests.

To prevent the spread of diseases, clean up any fallen leaves and debris in late autumn. This simple practice can significantly reduce the risk of fungal infections and pest infestations.
