Kniphofia 'Nancy's Red'

red-hot poker

Product Image
This striking herbaceous perennial offers a vibrant display of colour in late summer and autumn gardens. Featuring slender, densely packed spikes of tubular flowers that emerge as brick-red buds before opening to a deep coral-red hue, this Kniphofia is a beauty. As the blooms mature, they flare outwards, revealing a subtle yellow tinge at their tips, creating a mesmerising ombré effect. Standing modestly tall when in flower, this compact red-hot poker variety boasts linear, grass-like green foliage that provides an attractive base for the bold floral spikes. 'Nancy's Red' excels in mixed perennial borders, harmonising beautifully with late-season bloomers such as verbenas, dahlias and crocosmia. Its uniform coloration and elegant form make it a standout choice for gardeners seeking to add vertical interest and a fiery touch to their late summer borders.

How to care for Kniphofia Nancy's Red:

Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Prepare the area by incorporating organic matter and ensuring good drainage. Space plants about 60-90cm (2-3ft) apart, planting at the same depth as they were in their containers. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch to retain moisture. Once established, Kniphofia is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from regular watering during dry spells. Feed in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. In autumn remove and compost the faded flower spikes and apply a deep dry mulch such as pine needles around the crown of the plant. Cut back to the ground in spring to keep the foliage fresh-looking.
