This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: July to October
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Initially deep orange red, the buds of this herbaceous perennial with linear, grass-like leaves, become paler before they open, while the flowers of 'Pineapple Popsicle' continue to fade to pale yellow as they mature. This creates a markedly two-tone effect on each flower spike in a plant that is suited to hot, dry summers once established. The neat foliage is an added bonus. Modest in height, this 'Red Hot Poker' will make a good potted subject on a south-facing terrace. Seen here flowering with Agastache ‘Summer Love’.

  • Garden care: In autumn remove and compost the faded, flower spikes and apply a deep, dry mulch around the crown of the plant. Cut back to the ground in spring to keep the foliage fresh-looking. Divide and re-plant overcrowded colonies in spring.
