This perennial is semi-evergreen so it can lose some of its leaves in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose them all, but then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: July to September
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

A compact, clump-forming and architectural perennial forming stiff spikes of tubular deep-orange red flowers that fade to tangerine as they age. Rising above arching, linear, dark-green leaves and lasting well into autumn, the ‘red hot pokers’ of ‘Poco Sunset’ look especially good in tropical-themed gardens, adjacent to water, and in naturalistic plantings alongside Achillea, Rudbeckia, and Helenium.

  • Garden care: In autumn remove and compost the faded flower spikes and apply a deep, dry mulch around the crown of the plant. Divide and replant overcrowded colonies in spring.
