A cross between the English and Portuguese lavenders, this form tends to flower slightly later than many others, but its long, slender flowerspikes and grey-green leaves smell divine, so they are often used for making pot-pourri. Forming a generous-sized bush, Lavandula × intermedia 'Dutch Group' looks sublime when used to line the edges of a wide pathway.

How to care for Lavandula × intermedia Dutch Group:

Plant in a sunny, very well-drained spot with neutral to slightly alkaline soil. Cultivated varieties of Lavandula × intermedia grow larger and more vigorously than English lavenders, so allow extra space for airflow and spread. Once established it bcomes more drought-tolerant and well suited to low-maintenance gardens and gravel planting.

Water deeply but sparingly, and avoid heavy or poorly drained ground, as winter wet is more of a risk than cold. In colder or wetter areas, improve drainage with grit or plant on a slight mound to keep the base dry rather than relying on thick organic mulches.

In early spring, usually April, lightly trim to remove damaged or dead growth. After flowering in mid to late summer (later than English lavender), cut back the faded flower stems and shape the plant, taking care not to cut into the older woody framework, as lavender does not regenerate well from old wood.
