Leucothoe axillaris 'Curly Red' (PBR)
switch ivy
- Position: partial shade
- Soil: moist, acidic soil
- Rate of growth: average
- Flowering period: spring
- Hardiness: fully hardy
The foliage of this little evergreen shrub are curled and variously puckered, which gives it year-round textural interest, while their colouring also changes throughout the seasons. It initially emerges in a bright pinkish red flush before maturing to a rich, lustrous green, but then, as the temperatures dip for winter, they develop a burgundy tint, which is often present until the temperates start to creep up again in spring. - Garden care: Minimal pruning is required. Remove misplaced, dead or diseased branches in late spring.
