lovage

lovage or Levisticum officinale

Product Image
A tall addition to the herb garden, this hardy perennial can be used to season soups and stews. The leaves, stems and seed of lovage, have a similar (but stronger) flavour to celery, and it is said to be effective in aiding digestion or calming an upset stomach.

How to care for Levisticum officinale:

Plant lovage in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in full sun, allowing plenty of space as it grows tall and wide. Keep it well watered during dry spells and feed occasionally with a balanced fertiliser to encourage leafy growth.

Start harvesting young leaves from June until the first frosts, cutting stems as needed to promote fresh growth. The plant dies back in winter, so protect the crown with a cloche or mulch to prevent damage from cold and excessive wet.
