large-flowered mallow wort

Product Image
This striking plant features broadly trumpet-shaped flowers ranging from pale pink to deep magenta-pink, each with a vivid green eye at the centre and highlighted by purple veins. From summer to autumn, it produces bright green sepals and attractive Chinese lantern buds, adding unique visual appeal to any garden. Ideal for borders and cutting gardens, its long blooming season and vibrant colours make it a standout addition, offering both beauty and versatility for garden enthusiasts.

How to care for Malope trifida Vulcan:

Plant in a sunny spot with well-drained, fertile soil, enriching the planting area and backfill with well-rotted organic matter. Water regularly to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, allowing it to dry slightly between waterings. Fertilise monthly during the growing season with a balanced, liquid feed. Remove spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming and prevent excessive self-seeding. Provide support or staking for the tall stems in exposed locations.

Sowing instructions:

For best results, sow seeds directly in the garden after the last frost. Prepare a fine tilth, sow seeds thinly on the surface, and cover lightly with soil. Keep the soil consistently moist until seedlings emerge. Thin seedlings as needed and transplant outdoors after the last frost, spacing them 25-30cm (10-12in) apart. Alternatively, start them indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date and pot up, waiting to transplant outdoors when the risk of severe cold has passed.
