Mimulus cardinalis

scarlet monkey flower

Product Image
Bursting into summer with a vibrant display, this upright, short-lived perennial, often grown as an annual, boasts two-lipped scarlet flowers up to 5cm (2in) in length throughout the season.

Anchored by creeping rhizomes, Mimulus cardinalis adds a fiery splash to your reliably damp or boggy spots (even happy in shallow, marginal conditions). The flexibility to trim as needed throughout the growing season allows for easy maintenance, and a strategic removal of seed heads ensures an encore of prolific flowering.

How to care for Mimulus cardinalis:

These marginal plants thrive in moist, humus-rich soil and can be grown either as bog plants or shallow aquatics. For boggy borders, we offer a 9cm nursery pot option — plant them in reliably damp ground in full sun to partial shade. Keep the soil consistently moist and protect young shoots from slugs and snails.

If choosing our aquatic pot option, place them at the pond edge with up to 10cm (4in) of water above the compost. Removing seed heads encourages new flowers to form.
