Mimulus guttatus

common large monkey flower

Product Image
Found colonising reliably moist soils or riverbeds, this fast-growing perennial is ideal for adding colour to the marshy edges of a pond.

Initially upright, Mimulus guttatus will send out stolons that root at their nodes, producing more plants and forming a generous clump. The funnel-shaped, yellow flowers are very pretty and appear in loose clusters in summer.

How to care for Mimulus guttatus:

These marginal plants thrive in moist, humus-rich soil and can be grown either as bog plants or shallow aquatics. For boggy borders, we offer a 9cm nursery pot option — plant them in reliably damp ground in full sun to partial shade. Keep the soil consistently moist and protect young shoots from slugs and snails.

If choosing our aquatic pot option, place them at the pond edge with up to 10cm (4in) of water above the compost. Removing seed heads encourages new flowers to form.
