Pachyphragma macrophyllum

large-leaved pachyphragma

Product Image
Providing a carpet of heart-shaped foliage, Pachyphragma macrophyllum is an ideal groundcover for a woodland floor or for spilling over the front edge of a partially shaded bed. Small clusters of cabbage-like, white flowers appear in early spring and these are followed by distinctive seed pods.

The flowers have a pungent smell, but they look very sweet so it’s a useful choice for adding seasonal interest to areas where you want reliable ground cover without needing to place it close to seating or entertaining spaces.

It is an evergreen to semi-evergreen perennial, usually retaining much of its foliage through winter, although leaves may become damaged or die back in colder conditions.

How to care for Pachyphragma macrophyllum:

Plant in full to partial shade in moist, fertile, humus-rich soil that drains well. Water regularly while it establishes and during prolonged dry spells, as it prefers soil that does not dry out completely.

Once settled, it forms a spreading carpet of foliage that makes useful ground cover beneath trees and shrubs. Remove faded flower stems and any damaged leaves to keep plants looking tidy.
