Physostegia virginiana

obedient plant

Product Image
An adaptable herbaceous perennial boasting erect square stems adorned with lance-shaped, serrated leaves. From midsummer to early autumn, it unveils a spectacle of purple to pink (sometimes white) tubular flowers, arranged in short, upright spikes, perfect for cutting and resembling miniature snapdragons. Physostegia virginiana commands attention in summer gardens, offering a long-lasting bloom suitable for boggy situations, cottage gardens or floral arrangements.

How to care for Physostegia virginiana:

Tolerant of a wide range of soil moistures, Physostegia thrives in boggy conditions. Support with brushwood or stakes in late spring before the flowers appear. After flowering cut back the faded stems to the ground to encourage new growth from the base of the plant. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the plant in early spring.
