Product Image
This unique Jacob's ladder produces delicate white, fragrant flowers with a striking violet-purple eye and contrasting deep-toned sepals that give added interest before the buds even open. The flowers form in clusters, reminiscent of pelargoniums, before opening to reveal their regal centres. The foliage adds to its appeal with finely divided leaflets edged with a subtle purple flush, especially noticeable in cooler weather.

Launched by Crocus in association with Plant Heritage at The RHS Chelsea Flower Show, this upright, clump-forming perennial is easy to grow and ideal for borders, wildlife gardens, or cottage-style planting schemes. It performs best in full sun or part shade with moist, well-drained soil and benefits from regular deadheading to extend flowering.

Polemonium Violet Heart brings colour and structure from late spring into early summer and attracts pollinators. It reaches around 40cm (16in) in height and spread, making it a good mid-border choice that combines well with other perennials, such as Agastache (imaged alongside).

How to care for Polemonium Violet Heart ('tuipol') (PBR):

Polemonium prefers a spot in partial shade or dappled sunlight with fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Mulch in spring with organic matter to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Water regularly during dry spells, especially in the first year after planting. After the first flush of flowers, cut back the stems to encourage a second round of blooms. In autumn, remove faded flowerheads and cut the plant back to ground level, composting the spent material.

Avoid planting in areas with waterlogged soil over winter, as the crown may rot.
