This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: partial shade
  • Soil: moist, humus rich, neutral to acid soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: April to June
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

A ‘candelabra’ primula forming semi-evergreen rosettes of leaves, which give rise to upright tiers of reddish-pink flowers held on pale stems in early summer. Primula beesiana is a dramatic good choice for a damp, woodland garden and will happily naturalise if allowed to self-seed, so don’t deadhead after flowering if you are looking to create a swathe of rich colour en masse. Found growing wild in the mountain meadows of China, for best results in the UK, grow in moist, acidic to neutral soil, in partial shade.

  • Garden care: Plant out in a partially shaded and sheltered position, adding plenty of leaf mould and compost to the planting hole and backfill. Water well until established. Divide large clumps in late spring or early summer after the plant has flowered, preferably during a wet spell.
