Stachys officinalis

betony

Product Image
For centuries this pretty herb has been widely cultivated for its medicinal uses, however its ornamental value alone makes it a worthy addition to mixed borders or patio pots. The reddish-purple, pink or blush-white flowers of Stachys officinalis are rich in nectar, and they often appear throughout the summer, attracting bees and other pollinators in their droves.

How to care for Stachys officinalis:

Once established, Stachys benefits from regular watering during dry spells but tolerates most well-drained soils. Deadhead spent flowers while in growth to encourage further blooms, and give the plant a light trim after flowering to maintain a neat appearance.

Large clumps can be lifted and divided in early spring to rejuvenate the plant and control size. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and suppress weeds, and the plant generally requires minimal feeding if grown in moderately fertile soil.

Sowing instructions:

In autumn, sow 1cm deep into a well prepared seedbed and after the cold weather, the warmer temperatures in spring should trigger germination. Alternatively, sow indoors in spring into covered seed trays and before placing them in the fridge for 2-3 weeks to cold stratify. Move to a cold frame or unheated greenhouse and when large enough to handle, grow on in individual pots, gradually acclimatising before planting out.
