Tagetes patula 'Burning Embers'

Swedish marigold, French marigold

Product Image
Deep orange-red blooms burn brightly throughout the summer on this well-known bushy annual often grown as a companion plant with tomatoes to restrict the spread of pests such as aphid.

The petals of Tagetes 'Burning Embers' are edible and can be scattered over salads, and because they are so easy to grow in a sunny, well-drained spot, marigolds are ideal for children. Do remember to deadhead regularly and they'll continue to flower throughout the summer and even into autumn.

How to care for Tagetes patula Burning Embers:

Pot up and grow on in a well-lit and ventilated frost free environment (such as a greenhouse, coldframe or conservatory). Plant out after all risk of frost has passed. Pinch out the growing tips to encourage bushier growth, and feed at regular intervals with a high-potash fertiliser throughout summer.

Sowing instructions:

Sow Tagetes indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost in a light, well-draining seed compost. Press seeds lightly into the soil but don’t cover them too deeply, as they need light to germinate.

Keep the compost moist and warm around 18-20°C (64-68°F); seedlings usually appear in 5-10 days. Once they have a few true leaves, transplant them into individual pots and harden off outdoors before planting out after the risk of frost has passed.
