This classic double-sided digging mattock is just the job for cultivation and weeding. With plenty of heft, it’s a good sturdy tool for loosening soil and lifting weeds, especially in difficult soil.

Pairing two tools in one means you can get beds, borders and veg plots ready for planting without changing tools. Perfect if you’re going to the allotment and need to travel light.

Swing it down like an axe and the narrow pointed blade can be used to chop up clods and prise out deep tap roots. You can also draw it along to make drills for sowing and use it to thin out seedling rows.

On the other side, the sharp 3 prong fork is excellent for easing compaction, raking and clearing.

To keep it extra secure, the carbon steel head is attached to the ash wood handle like a traditional axe. The handle has a slotted end, shaped so it fits snugly into the eye of the mattock. A metal wedge is then hammered in, forcing the handle outwards and locking it firmly in place.

Supplied with a lifetime guarantee on metal parts.

The Dutch are renowned for making the world’s finest garden tools, and DeWit is the most respected name of all. Founded in 1898, the family-owned toolmaker combines old-fashioned quality and craftsmanship with innovative design to create superior tools that last a lifetime.

Every tool is hand-forged in the Netherlands from tough boron steel - shaped, sharpened and burnished for durability, giving it the same blackened patina as traditional Edwardian tools. Each is fitted with an FSC-certified solid ash handle for ultimate strength and shock resistance, oiled to provide first-class protection against the elements.

All DeWit tools come with a lifetime guarantee against manufacturing defects, making them a truly once in a lifetime purchase.
