An herbaceous perennial forming a compact mound of mid-green foliage, with flowers that stand out for their rich purple colour and grey-tipped petals, surrounded by a ruff of purple bracts with white centres. Astrantia major 'Star of Beauty' is particularly attractive to bees and offers a long blooming period, making it an excellent choice for both cut and dried flowers. Thriving in dappled shade and well-drained, humus-rich soil, it’s perfect for sheltered borders, woodland settings, or near water features. How to care for Astrantia major Star of Beauty (PBR):
Incorporate plenty of organic matter when planting and water well in dry weather, especially newly established plants. Lift and divide large clumps in early spring and apply a generous 5-7cm mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost around the plant. Divided specimens may take some time to establish since they don't like having their roots disturbed. Astrantia thrive in consistently moist soils and perform best in cool, partially shaded summer conditions.
