The gorgeous flowers of this reliable evergreen shrub are the star attraction. They are glowing white and have lots of petals, which unfurl in a symmetrical pattern creating a dazzling contrast against the backdrop of lustrous green foliage. They are also quite large (up to 10cm across) and they appear from mid-winter to early spring, adding a welcome splash of colour when it is needed most. Even when not in flower though, it will provide a lush backdrop for the summer froth.
How to care for Camellia japonica Nuccio's Gem:
To prevent damage to the emerging buds and flowers protect from cold, dry winds and early morning sun. Water established plants in dry weather to prevent bud drop. Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser in mid-spring and again in June. Top-dress annually with shredded bark or well-rotted leaf mould. After flowering lightly trim or prune any branches that spoil the appearance of the plant.
