Plant Carpinus trees between late autumn and early spring, avoiding frozen or waterlogged soil. Prepare a planting hole wide enough to accommodate the roots comfortably and enrich the backfill with well-rotted organic matter.
After planting, maintain a clear, circular area around the base of the stem approximately 50cm (20in) in diameter, keeping it free of grass and weeds. Apply a layer of mulch over this area each spring, taking care to keep it away from direct contact with the trunk. Water during dry spells for the first couple of years. Minimal pruning is needed, though light shaping can be done in winter if required.
