The season of interest kicks off in early spring, when the bare branches of this Eastern redbud are studded with small clusters of rich pink flowers. The appearance of these however is quickly followed by the heart-shaped foliage, which often emerges with a faint pink flush.
Cercis canadensis 'Alley Cat' soon reveals however its stunning green and cream variegations, which offer a bright splash of colour throughout the summer before turning yellow in autumn.
How to care for Cercis canadensis Alley Cat:
When planting, add some soil conditioner (well-rotted compost) to the planting hole and some mycorrhizal fungi to aid root establishment.
Ensure the top of the plant's compost is flush with the level of the surrounding soil and the collar of the tree is above ground level.
Support taller specimens either with a bamboo cane and or stake during establishment. Water generously around the base of the plant.
