Double tulip collection

tulip collection

Double tulips are noted for their large, long-lasting, peony-like flowers. This collection contains both early and late flowering cultivars, so could provide colour for several weeks from mid-April.

How to care for Double tulip collection:

Using fresh, good-quality compost, plant bulbs in pots from September to November. For borders, we advise waiting until after the first frosts (typically mid-October to early December depending on your location) to reduce the risk of potential disease such as Tulip Fire. Plant bulbs 15-20cm (6-8in) deep and 10-15cm (4-6in) apart in fertile, well-drained soil. Alternatively, allow 7-9 bulbs per 30cm sq or 60-75 bulbs per m². If you’re unable to plant your bulbs immediately, they can be stored in a cool environment with good air circulation. Remove all the packaging and place them in a loose-weave jute sack before labelling and hanging up in a dry, unheated garden shed or well-ventilated greenhouse.

In spring, when the plants are in active growth, apply a high-potash fertiliser (like Tomorite) each week until the leaves start to die back. Pinch off the spent flower heads as the petals fall, and let the stem and foliage die back naturally. The bulbs can then be lifted and discarded, or cleaned, dried and stored (as before) for replanting the following autumn.

What's included:

In each collection you will receive the following:

  • 7 × Tulipa 'Blue Diamond': Despite the name, the flower colour is more purple than blue, but they also have a subtle silvery lustre. The larger than average size of the fully double blooms will also pack a pretty impressive punch when woven through the border or used in pots. A good mixer, it goes well with most pinks and purples as well as deep plum. Grows to 40cm.

  • 7 × Tulipa 'Finola': This is an exquisite tulip (the photo doesn't really do it justice), which appears late in the season. Each of the petals is a subtle blend of creamy white and shades of pink, with just a hint of green. They form large, long-lasting flowers that mix with virtually any shade you could think of. Grows to 40cm.

  • 7 × Tulipa 'Mondial' (PBR): Peony-like flowers, which are made up of lots of lightly feathered pure white petals, top the stems of this double early tulip. The flowers have a light scent too, so plant them in a border near a seating area or path - or pot them up for the patio. Grows to 35cm.
