Halesia carolina

silver bell

Product Image
A magnificent display is created in late spring, when pendent clusters of white, bell-shaped flowers appear. These emerge at the same time as the fresh green leaves, which will later turn buttery shades in autumn before they fall. The flowers are followed by persistent, winged fruits, that will often stay on the tree into winter.

A beautiful, deciduous tree that works well on the edges of a woodland garden, Halesia carolina can be underplanted with seasonal bulbs to create an impressive centrepiece for the spring garden.

How to care for Halesia carolina:

Plant in fertile, moist but well-drained soil enriched with plenty of well-rotted compost, in a spot with sun or light shade, sheltered from cold winds. Stake young trees firmly until well established and water regularly during dry spells to encourage deep rooting.

Apply a mulch of garden compost or leaf mould in spring to conserve moisture and improve soil. Pruning is rarely needed—simply remove dead, damaged or crossing branches in late autumn or winter to maintain a clean and open shape.
