Wonderful additions to a jungle-themed border, these striking perennials are highly prized for their exotic-looking foliage and brightly coloured flowers. Originating from subtropical regions where they are found colonising forest margins, they will thrive in full sun or light shade where there is a reliable source of moisture in summer. In colder parts of the country they should be lifted after the first frost and the rhizome stored in frost-free conditions over winter. Many species however will survive outside in milder areas if the crown of the plant is protected in winter by a dry winter mulch, particularly if they are growing near a warm, sunny wall or fence.

In each collection you will receive 1 bare root plant of each of the following:

  • Hedychium gardnerianum Large cylindrical racemes of sweetly scented yellow flowers, each with protruding red stamens, put on a very showy display from midsummer. A vigorous species, the bold foliage will often have a slight blue tint. Grows to 1.5m.

  • Hedychium densiflorum Forming a slowly spreading clump of lustrous foliage, this compact ginger lily is one of the hardier forms. The slender spikes of fragrant, orange-red flowers appear early in the season and tend to open in one impressive flush. Grows to 1m.

  • Hedychium flavescens Tall stems are clothed in pointed, lance-shaped leaves, which can grow to 60cm long and have a softly hairy reverse. In late summer or early autumn these stems are crowned with clusters of spicily-scented, creamy-yellow flowers. Grows to 1.2m.

  • Garden care: Plant the rhizomes into pots using a good soil-based compost such as John Innes No2. The rhizome should be placed horizonatly just below the surface of the soil with the small reddish coloured buds facing upwards. Water well and then grow on under glass until all risk of frost has passed. Alternatively, store the rhizomes in a cool, frost-free place (such as a garage, shed or unheated porch) until they can be planted straight out in the garden. Keep well watered during the summer, but dy during winter. The rhizomes should be covered in the Autumn with a deep, dry mulch, or brought inside and kept in a frost free spot until the Spring when they can be planted outside again.
  • CAUTION do not eat ornamental bulbs
