Tall, upright stems and fine, willow-like foliage give this sunflower plenty of presence in a sunny border, with the narrow leaves moving freely in the breeze. Helianthus salicifolius forms a substantial clump and is valued as much for its unusual foliage as its flowers, making it a useful choice for adding height and structure.
From late summer into early autumn, numerous golden-yellow daisies with brown centres appear above the foliage, each measuring around 5-7cm (2-2¾in) across. Give it plenty of room to spread and you can cut the stems back hard in late May to encourage shorter, sturdier growth, if desired.

How to care for Helianthus salicifolius:
Plant in full sun, ideally towards the back or middle of a sunny border where its height and spreading habit have room to develop. It prefers fertile, well-drained soil that retains some moisture, so improve poorer soils with well-rotted organic matter before planting.
Water regularly during the first growing season while it establishes, then water during prolonged dry spells. Give plants around 90-120cm (3-4ft) of space and provide support if growing in an exposed position. Cut the stems back hard in late May to encourage shorter, sturdier growth and reduce flopping.
Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring and mulch around the plant with organic matter, keeping it clear of the crown. Divide congested clumps in spring if required.
