Homegrown in the UK, each rounded pseudobulb usually produces a solitary bloom in spring. A soft blend of pink and lilac, the flowers have a white lip, which is variously mottled with brown and plum-pink. After the flower starts to fade, a folded leaf unfurls, and new pseudobulbs start to develop at its base, which in time will result in a bigger clump.
How to care for Pleione formosana:
The bulbs should be gently bedded in to the top of the compost, making sure that at least two thirds of the bulb is sitting above the compost. Ideally they should be spaced at 10-15cm intervals, or if potting up, allow three per 15cm diameter pot. They are not fully hardy so they will need winter protection. Ideally they should be grown in a pot and moved to a cool greenhouse or conservatory to keep dry over winter.
