A breakthrough in breeding has resulted in this wonderful plant, which will start to flower up to 2 months earlier than its parent R. Goldsturm. First discovered by a grower in Plaquemine, Louisiana, it made its debut throughout Europe in 2011. The most intriguing thing about this variant is that it is not dependent on the length of the day to induce flowering. Therefore it is possible for it to start flowering in early summer and not finish until mid to late autumn - an impressive feat we're sure you will agree!
How to care for Rudbeckia fulgida Early Bird Gold:
Rudbeckia thrive in full sun and well-drained soils, avoiding waterlogged conditions in winter. Improve heavy or clay-based soils by incorporating generous amounts of compost or other organic matter prior to planting.
Protect young growth from slugs and snails, as they can quickly decimate tender new foliage. Once established, Rudbeckia are generally low-maintenance, but benefit from occasional division, in late autumn or early spring, to rejuvenate congested clumps.
