Rudbeckia laciniata 'Herbstsonne'
coneflower
This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.
- Position: full sun
- Soil: moderately fertile, preferably heavy but well-drained soil
- Rate of growth: average
- Flowering period: July to September
- Hardiness: fully hardy
Large, bright yellow, daisy-like flowers up to 12cm across with conical centres that are green to begin with and then fade to yellowish brown with age. A stunning, clump-forming coneflower that flowers from midsummer through to early autumn and looks particularly lovely with late summer-flowering perennials and ornamental grasses. Like all coneflowers, it copes well in a sunny spot and is ideal for the back of a border that doesn't dry out over summer. - Garden care: Lift and divide congested colonies in autumn or spring. Support with ring stakes or brushwood well before the flowers appear.
