Niwaki hori hori pro weeding trowel & canvas sheath
This new generation professional hori hori from Niwaki takes this fabulous tool up a notch. Forged from SK-5 carbon steel (the same steel they use in their garden shears) it’s sharper, stronger and more impact resistant with great edge retention.
Each tool is handcrafted especially for Niwaki by third generation family craftsmen in Miki, deep in Hyogo, one of the heartlands of horticultural blacksmithing in Japan.
This blade will stand up to tough treatment. Grab it for digging, weeding, planting, dividing, scraping and any kind of cutting. The subtly profiled beech wood handle makes it comfortable to hold, and the canvas sheath keeps it safe and easily accessible.
Though Japanese steel is extremely hard and sharp, please keep in mind it can be brittle. Avoid twisting the blade or applying uneven pressure. In soil, especially heavier soils, it’s best to use an in-out action rather than yanking it back to prise out stones, roots, etc.
Please note: the blade will arrive with a splodge of varnish to protect the carbon steel from oxidation during transport. It is normal for this to be uneven and to rub off with use.

Caring for your hori-hori
Clean the blade after use (water and washing up liquid is fine), dry well and apply a coat of camellia oil before storing in a dry place. With regular use, carbon steel will eventually stain, rust and lose its edge. A Crean Mate or scouring pad will scrub away rust and a sharpening stone will restore the blade edge.Though Japanese steel is extremely hard and sharp, please keep in mind it can be brittle.
