Berries & cream paeonia collection

paeony or peony

Product Image
This stunning peony collection blends rich cerise-purple, soft rose pink, and pure white blooms for a striking yet elegant display. Bursting into flower from early to midsummer, these peonies offer a luxurious mix of bold colour and delicate charm, with their full, fragrant blooms standing tall above lush green foliage.

Peonies are loved for their bold, dissected foliage and extremely beautiful, showy flowers, which are ideal for adding colour to mixed, herbaceous or shrub borders in spring and summer.

Originating from woodland clearings, grassland and meadows, the tuberous roots of the herbaceous forms act as storage tissue, which allows the mature plants to become drought tolerant once established. They will thrive in deep fertile soils that are moist but well drained, and although tolerant of some light shade, they perform best in full sun. Long-lived clump-forming perennials, they can resent being moved,

although this can usually be done quite successfully if tackled in autumn. Some may require staking to support the weight of the flowers.

How to care for Berries and cream paeonia collection:

Bare root plants should either be potted up or planted out as soon as possible while avoiding frosty or waterlogged conditions. Plant all peonies into well-prepared soil, making sure that the highest bud on the crown is no deeper than 5cm (2in) below the soil surface.

In growth, keep well fed and watered, and remove spent flowers after they have faded. In each subsequent spring, apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser around the base of the plant and mulch with well-rotted compost or manure.

What's included:

In each collection you will receive 3 Paeonia bare root plants - 1 of each of the following varieties:

  • Paeonia 'Red Sarah Bernhardt': Producing an abundance of lightly scented flowers in early summer, this wonderful peony will offer lashings of colour for both the border and the vase. First introduced in China in 1980, its name may hint at it being a red-flowered version of the ever-popular 'Sarah Bernhart', however it really really is quite unique, and despite its name, the flowers are more cerise-purple than red. It packs a punch in the border, and once established, it will keep coming back year after year. Grows to 100cm.

  • Paeonia 'Sarah Bernhardt': Enormous, rose pink, fragrant, double summer flowers and mid-green leaves. This magnificent, late-flowering, pale pink peony has been popular since the Edwardian era. To support the large flowers stake in spring using bamboo canes or metal link stakes. An excellent specimen plant for a partially sunny border. Grows to 100cm.

  • Paeonia 'Duchesse de Nemours': Producing huge, bowl-shaped pure white, fragrant, double flowers, flushed green in bud, from early to midsummer. This classic, double-flowered peony from the mid-nineteenth century is a favourite of the cut flower trade. It will thrive in full sun or partial shade. Fill the bare ground around the peony before the leaves appear with spring bulbs to prolong the season of interest. Grows to 80cm.
